How to install Wear OS watchfaces (without losing your mind)

Most install problems are the same 3–4 issues repeating forever. Here’s a clean checklist that works.

Installing a Wear OS watchface should be easy. In reality, it’s often a weird little dance between your phone, your watch, Google Play, and the fact that “installed” sometimes means “installed somewhere… eventually”.

What this post is: a troubleshooting-first guide for when installs feel broken.
What it isn’t: a basic “click here” walkthrough (that’s on our How to Download page).

Before you try anything: the 60‑second sanity check

Most installation issues come from one of these five things. Check them first:

  • Same Google account on phone and watch (especially if you have multiple accounts).
  • Watch is connected (Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi) and not in airplane mode.
  • Play Store is available on the watch (some older models behave differently).
  • Battery isn’t extremely low (low power modes can pause installs).
  • Give it time: watch installs can take 1–3 minutes to appear after you hit install.

The 2 ways installs actually happen (and why one “works” more often)

Method A: install from your phone (convenient, but sometimes vague)

Installing from the phone is often fine — but it’s also where you’ll see “Installed” even though the watch part is still syncing. If you use this method and don’t see the face on your watch, jump to the troubleshooting section below.

Method B: install directly from the watch (less pretty, more reliable)

When installs are being stubborn, installing directly on the watch tends to be the fastest fix. Open the Play Store on the watch, search the watchface name (or “Aetnawood”), and install from there.

Where did it go? How to actually find your newly installed watchface

Even when it installs correctly, the face might not pop up instantly. Try:

  1. Press and hold your current watchface to open the watchface carousel.
  2. Scroll through — some watches place new faces under a “Downloaded” or similar section.
  3. If you still can’t see it, restart the watch (yes, really) and check again.

Fixes by symptom (the stuff people rage‑search at midnight)

✅ Symptom: “It says installed” but I can’t find it anywhere

  • Wait 2 minutes (watch installs can lag behind the phone confirmation).
  • Restart the watch and check the watchface carousel again.
  • On the watch: open Play Store → Manage apps and confirm it’s listed there.
  • If it’s listed but not showing: uninstall and reinstall directly on the watch.

✅ Symptom: The Play Store only installs to my phone, not my watch

This usually means the store isn’t targeting the watch device properly. The fix is simple: install directly from the watch Play Store (Method B).

✅ Symptom: Install is stuck / spinning forever

  • Make sure the watch has a stable connection (Wi‑Fi can help).
  • Restart the watch and try again.
  • If it persists, try installing from the opposite device (phone vs watch).

✅ Symptom: “This app isn’t compatible with your device”

This can happen for a few reasons:

  • The watch isn’t running Wear OS (or is running a very old version).
  • The store is targeting the wrong device/account.
  • Region/device availability rules (rare, but it happens).

Try searching the watchface on the watch’s Play Store directly. If it doesn’t appear, it’s often a compatibility listing issue rather than an install bug.

Power move: what to include if you contact support

If you use our Support page, include this info and we can usually solve it fast:

  • Watch model (e.g., Galaxy Watch / Pixel Watch)
  • Wear OS version (if you know it)
  • Where you tried installing from (phone or watch)
  • What happened (installed but missing / incompatible / stuck)
  • A screenshot of the Play Store listing or the install state (if possible)
Pro tip: If you’re stuck in the “installed but not showing” loop, installing directly from the watch Play Store resolves it most often.
